Your relationships can elevate you to new heights or drag you down into the dumps. What if your relationship is pretty good, like a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10? Should you stay, openly committing to that relationship for life? Or should you leave and look for something better, something that could become even better? This is the dreadful state of ambivalence. I read this book many years ago, and it completely changed how I think about long-term relationships. First, the book points out the wrong way to make this decision.

Kim and I had been seeing each other for maybe two months. Although she had been dropping some hints — hints of both her long-term interest in me as well as her complete lack of emotional stability. But I was less experienced back then.

You know what it’s like to have something demanded of you, right? If anything, it puts you on the defensive and makes you not want to do something. In my book What About Me? Learn how to make a request rather than a demand. This will tell your partner that you respect them, and will give them the opportunity to make a choice. When you make a demand of your partner, they often feel manipulated and controlled by you because they feel they have to do what you are telling them to do. So rather than being cooperative, they’ll be resentful.
When you make a request, however, it gives your partner the freedom to make their own decision about the task at hand and lead them to, hopefully, decide to follow through because they want to please you.
